Ward Eight
Ward Eight is one of those cocktail drinks which are prepared using whiskey. The drink has its origin from the city of Boston.
This drink was first served by the bartender Tom Hussion of Lock-Ober Café in 1898 in a dinner party on the eve of the election to Massachusetts State legislature to honor the politician Martin M. Lomasney who was contesting from the city’s Ward Eight.
That’s why this drink was identified by the name Ward Eight. Hussion might have added only some grenadine to Whiskey Sour to make the drink, but this addition of grenadine altogether changed the character of the drink. The drink was being served by this bar till it closed down during the prohibition period of USA. But, after the prohibition was withdrawn, it was adjudged one of the ten best drinks in 1934 by Esquire Magazine.
The bar reopened in the early 1950s and they are continuing to serve this drink to the customer. Also, this drink can also be had in some of the best bars of Boston.
There are many variations in the recipe of this drink. Different recipes may use blended whiskey, bourbon, rye or single malt scotch. Some other recipe may call for lime juice, lemon juice, and sour mix. Lock- Ober bar uses following ingredients:
- Rye Whiskey
- Fresh lemon juice
- Fresh orange juice
- Grenadine
- Maraschino cherry (optional)
