Ruby Rum Sunrise

September 2, 2009

Rum is an alcoholic drink which is produced from molasses, a by-product of sugar production using sugar cane. After fermentation and distillation, the clear distillate is stored in casks (generally made of oak) for aging. The color of the end product depends on the type of casks used for ageing. Most of world’s production of rum comes from the Caribbean and Latin American countries.

Different types of rum are produced. Of them Light Rum, Gold Rum and Dark Rum are more popular.  There are a few other types of rum available, which are not so popular. These are Flavored Rum, Overproof Rum and Cahaca. Flavored Rum is produced by adding spices and other aromatics during the distillation process. This started with coconut and spiced Rums.

This kind of rum is gaining popularity. Overproof Rum contains 75% alcohol and it is may prove injurious if it is taken as it is. It must be consumed after diluting it. And Cachaca is a kind of Rum produced in Brazil using sugar cane juice as its raw material instead of molasses.

Yet another cocktail drink which is made from rum goes by the name of Ruby Rum Sunrise. It has been developed by the famous expert regarding preparation of cocktail drinks, Colleen Graham. As she says, she developed the recipe on ‘of one of those lazy summer afternoons’ and ‘what’s in the bar today?” As it happens in the case another cocktail drink named Tequila Sunrise, this drink also features the rising of grenadine throughout the period one is enjoying this drink.

In case of Ruby Rum Sunrise, it is against a ruby red background. Preferably you should shake all the main ingredients and pour them over ice. It would make the entire drink lighter and would also ensure that the sour mix would get properly mixed in the drink. The detail of the recipe to make such a drink as stated by her is given below:

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Rum, grapefruit juice and sour mix are to be poured into cocktail shaker already filled with ice.
  2. Contents of the shaker should be shaked well.
  3. To serve the cocktail, the contents are to be strained into an ordinary glass filled with ice.
  4. Grenadine is to be poured on top of the drink until bottom of the glass is covered with it.
