Highball

December 16, 2008

The term ‘Highball’ itself is quite exotic. You have only to give free rein to your imagination and you can conjure up images of pleasure, excitement, thrill and what have you.

If you are the sporting type, being ‘on the ball’ can mean being very accurate and in form. If you go by the dictionary meaning, then ‘high’ means being at a peak or a lofted place and ‘ball’ means a gathering for a dance. ‘Ball’ can also mean whiskey. So highball can mean having a good time at an elevated place, probably up in the clouds or in heaven.

But the most probable and plausible description of ‘highball’, as applied to drinks and their origin, could mean a drink served in a tall glass with ice. At least that is what a ‘highball’ is today.

A highball essentially is a drink which has an alcoholic base (whiskey, rum, vodka or Tequila) and a non-alcoholic beverage, which could be some fruit juice, coke etc. Sometimes beer is added too.

It is served in a large, tall glass.

The more popular highball cocktails are: Alabama Slammer, Sex on the Beach, Moscow Mule, Jack & Coke and Tequila Sunrise.
