Cocktail Recipe for a Brandy Alexander
The brandy Alexander is a splendid, creamy brandy based cocktail which became very popular in the early 20th century. It is believed that the brandy Alexander was first made at the eve of the wedding of Princess Royal and Viscount Lascellas in 1922 in London. The cocktail, Brandy Alexander was created using the recipe of an earlier cocktail made from gin which was simply called as Alexander.
Brandy is a drink made from a fermented mash of grapes or any other fresh fruit. It is generally aged in the huge oak caskets and then bottled at 80 to 84 proofs. The famous brands of brandy include the Cognac & Armagnac which is formed in France.
The ingredients used to make the Brandy Alexander includes of 0.5 oz Brandy, 2 oz whipping cream, 0.5 oz Crème DE Cacao (a liqueur made from the seeds of the cacao plant and vanilla), 0.5 cup of crushed ice and 1 dashes nutmeg. The direction to make the cocktail is very simple.
Firstly fill the mixing glass with ice and then pour the other ingredients which include the crème de cacao, brandy, and the whipped cream to it. Shake the ingredients well and then strain it into a cocktail glass or a normal martini glass.
Garnish the cocktail with the grounded nutmeg before serving. The crème de cacao used in the cocktail can be of two types. One can use either white or brown crème de cacao based on the taste of the consumer.
Other than the general recipe, there is also an alternate method to create the Brandy Alexander. In this method, we need 2 jiggers dark crème de cacao, 1 jigger brandy, 1 pt vanilla ice cream and some crushed ice.
Similar to the general recipe, all the ingredients are poured into the shaker for proper mixing and the cocktail is then strained into a cocktail or martini glass. It is then garnished with the finely grated nutmeg which is sprinkled on the top before serving.
The Brandy Alexander cocktail has a lot of similarities with the other cocktails like the Avalanche, the Flying grasshopper, the Mocha, the After dark martini and the After eight shooter.
