Blue Curacao Coconut Rum

The Blue Curacao coconut rum seems to be the most popular cocktail serving, when it comes to the Hawaiian parties and social gatherings. The Hawaiian party just seems to conjure up many images like the tropical straws, cocktail umbrellas and some flower leis. This cocktail is considered to be the most fabulous drink in many extravagant parties thrown by the rich Hawaiian elite.

Usually this cocktail is usually made by mixing Rum, pineapple juice and blue curacaos, but some even try their hands by mixing vodka too. However it should be borne in mind that this cocktail resembles to the Blue Hawaiian cocktail and looks almost similar to it, the only difference being the coconut crème used for garnishing it.

The blue curacao coconut rum was actually invented by Harry lee, a legendary bartender of the Hilton Hawaii village in Hawaii. Harry accidently invented this drink when a visitor requested him a cocktail featuring to be blue in color. So after experimenting with many variations one after the other, he finally settled down with the one, which would cater the needs of the visitor. It’s this variation, which is popularly known as the Blue Curacao coconut rum.

The Blue Hawaii, a movie released during the ‘60s seems to be another reason for its widespread popularity, since it had Elvis Presley in the lead. This movie featured the use of this cocktail which was almost similar to an advertisement, which is normally broadcasted on the television channels. Moreover the movie title sound track added to its popularity among everyone in the U.S.

The blue curacao is usually served on the rocks; however there are many other ways of sipping on this blue beverage. But usually it’s blended with ice cubes and margarita and is supposed to be served as a chilled cocktail. However even a wine glass or a champagne glass could be used for serving this Hawaiian delicacy.

One could use white rum or light rum as a base liquor, some even replace white rum with vodka. While flavored rum like the Bacardi or the Malibu would work wonders adding to its zing and aroma. Adding pineapple juice would also add up to its flavor. However the blue curacao rum proves to be quiet inexpensive and can be easily made by anyone. One does however not need to be an expert bar tender to enjoy this blue delicacy.
